Black spruce essential oil sourcing and uses

Have you tried doTERRA's new black spruce essential oil yet? It is oh, so grounding and smells like walking through a black spruce forest.

doTERRA's black spruce is sourced from Quebec in Canada and is a good news story because the spruce needles typically would just be left behind as waste material after being harvested for lumber and pulp and paper industries. After the Black Spruce remnants have been distilled, the branches and needles are taken to a local powerplant, where they are burned to produce energy. From this process they are also able to produce steam, which then powers the distillation process again. This creates a closed-loop system for maximum environmental sustainability and responsibility. Read more here.

I was pleased to meet Jean-Claude Villeneuve, who is doTERRA's sourcing partner at the doTERRA convention in Sept. It felt meaningful to meet him in person. Below is a picture of Jean-Claude with Emily Wright, one of doTERRA's founders.

Black spruce essential oil is so beautiful - it's a must have!
  • It's the key component in one of my favourite essential oil blends (Balance!) and helps to stimulate feelings of balance and courage.
  • Apply it topically to joints and bottoms of feet before and after exercise.
  • Add 2-3 drops to hands and breathe deeply to open airways.
  • Apply to back of neck to support your brain and cognitive function.

Scented pencils

Just in time for back to school, did you know you can make scented pencils and erasers using essential oils? It works great! How fun to send off the kids with pencils smelling like their favorite calming, uplifting, grounding, or focus boosting blend.

These and super easy. First, use non-toxic, natural wood, or recycled paper pencils, and non-toxic erasers.

Next add 20-30 drops of essential oil to a cotton pad and put it and your pencils and erasers in a plastic zipper bag.  Wait for a couple days and open the bag and your pencils and erasers will smell like whatever oil you placed on the cotton pad. The longer you keep it in the bag, the stronger the scent. You can add more drops after a day or so for maximum effect.

Here's a quick reference guide on how to do it, and videos too!

    Our family's experience

(I wrote this 6 years ago...)

Our family has just gone through a very stressful time as my seven year old son recently spent 12 days in the hospital. It was difficult for all of us, and made even more difficult because the hospital is a scent-free environment and I was unable to freely use my essential oils. (Although, I still snuck a drop of frankincense on the bottoms of his feet in the morning and at night).

Today was our first full day back at home, and I offered my son an AromaTouch Technique session. Since he is like his dad and can't lie still for long periods of time, I didn't follow the technique to a tee, but I applied ~ 2 drops of each of the oils to his spine and gently massaged them along his spine. He told me that it helped his belly, which was sore, and it also helped to relax him.

It was a beautiful experience for the two of us to share as I comforted my son with my loving touch and the healing oils. And inhaling the scents of all 8 of the oils layered over each other was very healing for us both.

This technique is so calming and balancing for the system. My friend, Jaime, typically picks a couple of the AromaTouch technique oils (usually lavender, AromaTouch, Balance and sometimes wild orange), and puts them on her young daughters' backs and feet. She finds that the girls are extremely mellow and relaxed after.

    • Bergamot
    • Roman Chamomile
    • Ylang Ylang
    • Cedarwood
    • Geranium
    • Fennel
    • Carrot
    • Palmarosa

    Lemon kale chips

    Ingredients
1 large bunch kale, washed and torn into bite-size pieces
    2 tablespoons olive oil
    2 drops Lemon oil
    Salt & pepper

    Instructions
    1. Preheat oven to 200° F.
    2. Wash and dry kale thoroughly.
    3. Combine olive oil and Lemon oil in large mixing bowl.
    4. Add kale and toss. Make sure kale is well coated with oils.
    5. Once coated, place on baking sheet in single layer.
    6. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
    7. Bake on the center rack for 45–50 minutes or until crispy.
Tip: Keep an eye on the smaller pieces and take them out if they are done earlier; otherwise they will burn.

    Why doTERRA?

doTERRA is unequivocally the most tested and most clinically verifiable source of pure essential oils in the world.

They utilize both in-house and third party testing. Each bottle has a source code which links to publicly available, third party test results online.

They don’t just test one batch of oils one time and provide a single analysis. They test every single bottle produced, every single time.

Third party testing is done through Aromatic Plant Research Center (APRC). Their lab specializes in the identification and quantification of pesticides, micro organisms, heavy metals, allergens, and synthetic chemicals.

They utilize 43 different testing methods including Gas Chromatography with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), Enantioselective or Chiral GC-MS, Gas Chromatography with flame ionization (GC-FID), liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry (LC/MS), and physical constant testing including: Optical Rotation, Specific Gravity, Refractive Index, Colorimeter (to name just some).

The APRC recently tested 50 different essential oil companies (from major names to small artisan distillers) and found out of the 50 tested, only 3 were actually providing truly pure essential oils.

Recently John Hopkins University partnered with doTERRA to conduct essential oil research with infectious diseases because, according to the Johns Hopkins representative inna public address, “doTERRA was the only verifiably pure essential oil provider they could find.”

In addition, the Huntsman Cancer Institute recently partnered with doTERRA, and Prime Meridian health care centers are slated to open 30 medical centers across the country recommending doTERRA’s essential oils in conjunction with allopathic medical protocols.

    Loyalty Rewards Orders

Your Loyalty Order is Your Own Personal, Customized Monthly Subscription Box. And doTERRA is the finest subscription box I’ve ever received, and the only one with which I continue year after year. Why?

    1. CUSTOMIZED FOR ME. I love choosing what I need for the month, every month. With other subscription boxes, the items are chosen for me.

    2. SPENDING LESS FOR HIGHER QUALITY, SAFER PRODUCTS. Replacing toxic, retail-priced, store-bought options with safer, wholesale-priced, plant-based options from doTERRA feels better. I'm now paying wholesale for my toothpaste, hand soap, body soap, shampoo, conditioner, mud mask, facial care, house cleaner, laundry detergent - and then I use the points I earn each month to receive Essential Oils for free.

    3. TINY MINIMUM ORDER. Unlike other subscription boxes, I choose to purchase what I want - even if it's just one item each month (which never happens, but it’s nice to know I have that option). For as few as 5pv (one Toothpaste), I get to keep the points I've earned thus far.

    4. FREE GIFTS. Each month, I receive a free product with my order, as long as the order is over 125 pv and ships before the 15th. Which I always do.

    5. FAR LESS EXPENSIVE. I receive 30% off retail prices with my monthly box of wellness, as I earn points each month. The longer you've been with doTERRA, the more points for free oils you'll receive. After one year of consistently ordering, I currently earn 30% back on all of my purchases. So every $100 I spent, I receive 30 points back for future orders. (That's the equivalent to a free lavender and lemon essential oil every month - but you get to choose which oils you get for free).

    6. FREE SHIPPING. Whatever I spend on shipping, I receive back as free product credits to spend on future orders.

    7. CANCEL ANYTIME. It's super easy to cancel anytime. But I’ve been on my monthly order for 6+ years now.

Deep Blue Soothing essential oil blend contains:
    • Wintergreen
    • Camphor
    • Peppermint
    • Ylang Ylang
    • Helichrysum
    • Blue Tansy
    • Blue Chamomile
    • Osmanthus
I love its fresh wintergreen / peppermint scent!
